Well it's Friday night and it's wet and I am at home.... Feeling like I should be eating a soup or a stew or a pot roast... Throw another log on the fire perhaps....? Just a week ago I was whinging about the heat!

Today I did something that I would have thought I would have done many times by now. But I ordered grocery items online and had them home delivered. And I am very happy with the result.

The store that I used was vegeout.com.au and the reason I went with them is that they are a local supplied in my neighborhood, that the prices seemed to be competitive / same to my usual grocery store supplies and finally the fact that they deliver for free (min $30 spend). So far I am very impressed with the quality and quantity of my order. I also got a little present, a bunch of white roses from them, which I thought was a nice touch for Valentines day!! Just so very convenient though!!

Also, in (un)related news, my anniversary flowers have well and truelly opened up and are looking and smelling very beautiful, I have brought them home from work so that I can enjoy them this weekend....

Valeversary Dinner at Wilson's

Andrew & I went out for a dinner to celebrate - kind of like (but not) a valentines and anniversary dinner.

I wanted to have some nice seafood, so that cut down the number of places that we had to chose from. In the end the location I chose was a restaurant at Portside. I just want to say that I LOVE what they have done with Portside - but the area around it really needs some work! I am sure that this will come with time.... So to Wilsons Boathouse Seafood Restaurant we went ....

Overall I think that it was a good choice - I enjoyed the night out and I think that this is a place that I would like to return to with family and friends. I particularly would like to to just go one day to the Oyster and Caviar Bar... accompanied by a few champers... Sounds like a GREAT Sunday afternoon!!!

Anyhow... Will try to provide some of my experiences:

Service
Bizarre. The woman (girl?) who attended to us was nice enough, although did not have a great command of the english language - think simple country girl - dumped in the city. The comment about the oyster shooters was hilarious when she tried to describe the Exotic coconut shooters with the desciptive of "brown stuff". GOLD!

Food
Abosolutely Brilliant. It's been a while since I had such lovely seafood.... FRESH! Just yum yum yum and more yum! The dessert menu left a bit to be desired though - we skipped out on that.

This is a complimentary Scallop dish that we were given - which was a scallop on top of a salsa with proscuitto. YUM!

For entree we shared some shooters - which had the old favourate Bloody Mary, as well a Coriander (coconut milk curry-like) flavour and a french lemonade (sour mix and french champagne).

For mains we decided on platters. Mine was all cold - King Neptune’s Platter - which included sand crab, Fraser Island prawns, Balmain bugs, shucked oyster (they weren't shucked), smoked salmon (to die for).

Andrew got the hot & cold variation which included less of the cold stuff and also had salt & pepper calamari, beer batter whiting and prawn cutlets.

Ambience
The "romantic" corner we were placed in was a bit drafty and dull.... Not very romantic at... But on reflection, I don't know if this is a restaurant that is romantic .. So we would have been better placed where we had a view of the comings and goings... In the thick(er) of things.

So overall maybe a 3.5 outa 5 meal...

It's been a little while between receiving flowers so I was very surprised to be asked up to the security desk to pick up something today at work.

Andrew spent most of the weekend get greasy under a 60 series landcruiser. Helping out a German Backpacker (4WD trekker??) to get his truck in a condition to let loose on the open road and explore the wilderness that is Australia...

It was with great relief on Sunday afternoon that they were finally finished... I hope that it all goes well for Tim!!

Today we had a couple of little visitors (well 2 big ones and one little) to share the sunny skies (and cool breezes) with us.

We were delighted to have Yvonne,Sean and the BABY visit us from the (far) south-side for a BBQ lunch. Even better -after lunch the girls went and had a "spot" of shopping..... It was baby's first girly shop (seeing as we had already looked at TVs with the boys and ate KFC at Carindale the day before).

Purchases included a DUMMY (only for the plane), a baby carrier (think babybjorn and I shouted Caitlin a baby hair brush and comb seeing as her parent let her leave the house with bed hair!!! The indignities!!!

Meanwhile the boys were doing welding, grinding and other grease monkey types of work back at home in the garage.

I think a happy SUN-DAY had by all!

BBQ lunch included Kangaroo Steak, of which I purchased the non marinated version for the first time and REALLY enjoyed it. This will be going on the shopping list again!

In other news, I have managed to feed an addiction, of late, to TV. Have been watching a number of series including Kylie XY, Gossip Girl, and the latest is Reaper ( thanks Dibbz).

Oh yeah and I have spent some time trying to find something to jazz up this blog... After much searching this is the template I settled on. Hope ya like it!!! It was really hard to find something funky yet not over the top, and I was so over the previous set-up... Hopefully this one works ok.... Good Oh! Back to work tomorrow - JOY! At least I have this Friday off for a wedding and THEN Andrew goes to Fraser so I have the house to myself (with the pets of course....) The only bummer will be that I have to do some STUDY! Jacarandas are blooming and exams are looming - is that how the saying goes? I lurve a jacaranda.... Up there with the frangipani (live - not stuck on the rear window of your car).... ciao-4-now.

After pondering the prospect of more freezer space, visiting a few outlets, and then eagerly awaiting the "cost price plus 3%" sale at a local retravision; I came to the conclusion that I don't want to spend upwards of $500 on additional freezer real-estate.

An idle browse through the weekend shopper came up with the goods - a dude in the next suburb with a 120 litre freezer on the market.

Bargained him down from $75 to $50 and I was the proud owner of a NEW (to me) freezer! Just hope it continues to work......

We ate yummo pork ribs - and look at those delicious sides (my contributions) of garden salad, mint & parsley baby pots and coleslaw (and asparagus - yummo!!).

We went down to the new parent's house and took dinner with us - which was very convenient... Andrew got some beef ribs from the local butcher and I complemented with corn on the cob, coleslaw, garden salad and a hot potato salad... A regular southern style feast!

Of course I got to give my favourite niece a cuddle or too. Despite the fact that she was a cranky little hungry girl....

Long time (again) no blogg... I am really cranky at the moment, haven't been feeling very well... In other news, an assignment due tomorrow, a brother's wedding, the prospect of becoming an aunt in September, exams, a puppy adoption, and more study.

Hey tonight we went to see the smashing pumpkins as part of the celebration that is/was Andrew's birthday. Overall it was an OK concert, but it was dampened by the vibe given out by the lead singer (who are the other people in the band???) who seemed to be very cranky - and had a few snide remarks for the crowd in general.

A bit too complicated for my needs - I just wanted to see an old fav band pull out some chart topping tunes .. but this was not to be... there was a few I will give you that - but a tad too much "filler" which included extended guitar jams, random playing, covers of songs including Britney's "You want a piece of me", also "My Blue Heaven" and another song which I can't place. It was very bizarre.

Anyway cranky, tired and have a cat operation ahead of me tomorrow.... A cocktail of emotions and feelings. ciao 4 now.

hmmm... who needs money

This month is not going to be a good one for me - me thinks. I am not going to go on about money or the lack of it, but lets just say that I haven't recovered from Dec / January and now I have car insurance, a car that has just come out of the panel beaters, subsequent hire car costs, 2 smashing pumpkins tix for Monday night, a $200 trip to the vet today (whoops wasn't going to actually mention money - but I do have two cats and most of the costs were for a lil box of flea stuff) and a sheep dog program up the sleeve.

And then there is Bella. Princess of Purr-sia. My lil grey kitty. Well she has to have an ENDOSCOPY on her nose and throat cavity because of her lymph nodes are inflamed, the Vet is leaning towards an infection from a foreign body in her i don't know what or some sort of polyp(s) which may need to be removed and / or biopsied. So yeah feeling great right now.... it's not even about the money really it's just that I am REALLY worried about her and concerned that it might be something more serious. If it we get past Tuesday - they find and remove what ever is causing it (and it's not something that might return or get worse) I will be happy. A course of antibiotics and we are on the MEND! Fingers crossed.

Oh yeah I don't even have the energy to rant about my car hire experiences! Anyways short story is they gave me a brand new EPICA and hopefully shoved the GETZ somewhere where the sun don't shine! Loved the epica - thanks Avis.

Yay for Australia & Steak!

Went to Milton on the recommendation of a few randoms on the net (i.e. googled “best steak +Brisbane” and looked at some random rants) of which the Embers Restaurant (http://www.embers.com.au) was recommended.

So I made a booking for 3 (really shouldn’t have). The interior was not really what I was expecting for a steak restaurant. A bit pretentious with fancy wooden chairs with arms. It had a strangely up-market feel which I did not really expect for a steak and grill place. But it had no ambience about it, being pretty empty it was like a hospital cafeteria feel, but as it filled up it just got noisier.

Service: About 60 seconds after being seated we were asked if we wanted a drink – hmmm how about you let us look at the drinks menu first??? Thanks Waitress # 1.

And then shortly after this we were served (?? More like just approached) by waiter # 2, which when IP asked if there were any special tonight we were told that everything was special, and then that specials are only for when the chef wants to get rid of something that is getting a bit past special. Hmmm.. ok ..RUDE!!!! When Waitress # 1 came back she balls it up not writing down our order properly so had to come back and confirm. I would like to say that the one saving grace was the waitress # 3 who served our meals, cleaned up and settled the bill - she was "nice" and helpful.

Food: I have to say that I had no complaints about the food. I ordered the rib on the bone and I absolutely loved it - a perfect medium rare, tasty AND tender. It's good when a steak is cooked as ordered (rare but required).

I also eyed up my brother’s rump (well his steak to be specific) and it was thick and looked very tasty.

IP ordered pork ribs (swear he is obsessed with ribs at the moment – this is the third time in a week), they didn’t look like anything to write home about! And can I add that the waitress asked "how would you like them cooked?" (ummm cooked please? geez it's not a steak!!)

Overall I think that they may have the best steak in Brisbane. The salads that we ordered, also were tasty and more importantly fresh!

Overall: I was going to give them a solid 8 out of 10 (one point off for the lack of ambience and the weird ass service) although after getting the bill, I am giving them a 7.5 because the steaks were expensive enough with out having to shell out another ten bucks for sauce and salad (side salad $6.50 and sauce $3.50) Damn you embers for charging me to have more than just a steak and a potato!

RATING GUIDE - 10: perfect; 9: excellent; 8: very good; 7: good; 6: passable; 5: disappointing; 1-4: woeful.

Day 21 - Last day on Formosa

Well last night started off well .. we (Yvonne, Sean, her brother and me) scootered off to a nice Japanese establishment called Kawata Yakiniku where you actually cook (BBQ) your own food - WAGYU steak, pork, chicken, bacon wrapped asparagus, prawns, japanese fish, scallops and squid. We then went and saw enchanted, which was a very light hearted and sweet movie.

We then went to the local pool hall and the boys had a couple of games of 9-ball and then a few of 8-ball.

We got home and I went to bed at about 3am. Shortly after this, some got violently unwell and proceeded to up-chuck the contents of their meal and the rest of their stomach contents. So between that and my snoring not much sleep was had.

Today we did absolutely NOTHING! Bit of a downer for our last day and we are not looking forward to the flight home either.

Day 20 - Fast train to Taoyuan

Waking up relatively early considering our 3am bedtime, we were picked up by Jacob & Vicky and escorted to the local computer area of Taichung. Sean was looking for a laser mouse for his new hot computer systen which his mate is building for him. No luck - as the prices are comparable to Australia. I managed to get a great deal on a 9 inch digital photo-frame, which will have pride of place on our new (yet to be bought) ikea buffet (to match the dining table), to display the memories of this GREAT trip. They also threw in a free (stuffed) giraffe!

After this we went to the restaurant from where it is reputed that pearl milk tea orginated (the previous nights was better) and also filled up on Taiwanese snacks including noodles, spicy stirfried mushrooms and dumplings.

Jacob and Vicky then dropped us in a youth area (as they had afternoon commitements) where were browsed the markets.

We then decided to head home - the transport option of choice for this trip was high speed rail. Due to the heighten use of this service we had the option of waiting one hour - or going first class. I don't know if it was worth the double price fee, although it was definately an experience. It did not feel like we were travelling at a highspeed. First class involved a bigger seat and free tea & coffee (also nuts and bottled water).

Now home in Jhongli - only one sleep and an overnight flight between me and Australia. Can't wait to get home to the boy and the girls. Wish I didn't have to return to work.

Day 19 - Slow train to 苗栗

Yesterday we went to Elaine's hometown, to meet up with her. Drove around in her little Nissan March (equivalent of a MICRA in Australia). This would have been excitement enough, but we had the complications of Elaine's CRAZY driving and the fact that we started the day on EMPTY! It was a fun day - as all adventures with Elaine have been.

We first went toa disused train station in the mountains which is now a bit of a tourist destination. Ate some traditional Hakka food. This consisted of what looked like a fern salad, stirfry Pork, and a noodle dish that was very delicious.

After eating, and walking the street area, we ventured on to pick strawberries. This was a soggy experience which was very muddy (not a good idea in brand new WHITE shoes). I utlised the gum boots which were on offer.

We finally caught the train down to Taichung to meet with Scott & Hyatt. We also met with a couple who were their close friends - Jacob & Vicky. Together, we enjoyed a hot-pot, with WAY (way way) too much food. I don't know how we fit in the peark milk tea later - maybe it was the stop-off at the sportswear store which worked up a further appetite.

After all this, (at midnight) we started the look for a place to stay for the night. This turned out to be quite a mission as the only hotels which were on offer were "love motels" or similar. In our quest we had a look at some - they were really unsuitable as they only had one bed (couples really do not require more) and no doors to bathroom areas. This was also complicated by the fact that it is CNY meaning expensive season. Some of the rooms we looked at had interesting chair like contraptions in them which were a bit shocking.

After a through search we finally found a room for a reasonable price and bedded down for the remaining hours of the night.

Day 18 - Happy New Year

Today is the new years eve in Chinese tradition. We had a pretty quiet day as the family were up early going to traditional hometown temples. Which meant sleeping was done this afternoon.

Yvonne and I then went to the city to do some last minute errands and shopping. I bought some fake eyelashes! Very practical errand.

Tonight we had a huge family dinner which was very tasty. There was a ricewine soup (very alcaholic), mud crab claws, steamed chicken, pork & mushroom soup, pork & green onions, sweet & sour whole fish, and a crab stirfry with green snap beans.

Fireworks can be seen and heard from the surrounding streets. There is a lot of people letting them off in the neighbourhood, some can be heard every minute. This photo was taken by Sean on the roof of the house we are staying at.

I hope to get back up to the roof later tonight, but it is VERY cold up there ... Maybe it will be going off at midnight. When I went up before, I did not realise that my camera did not have the memory card in it, so only got 30 mg of recording.

Day 17 - Zzzzz

Today was a bit of a non-event. I slept in until noon, and then we went downtown to the SOGO (posh department store) had some snacks (Sashimi) at a Japanese Restaurant and then came home in time for a huge Taiwanese hotpot. Need to make these at home!!

After dinner we watched "Memiors of a Geisha" to make up for not seeing any in Japan.

After that the family disappeared to begine CNY celebrations which prayer and now chinese firecrackers can be heard throughour the streets.

I should be in bed, but am strangely wide awake.... I want a Canon Camera - or a panasonic FX-33 - can't decide. Last time I went out on a limb with a digital camera purchase I got stuck with the damn Olympus. Four more sleeps (and an overnight plane trip) before I am home. If only I didn't have to go back to work on Monday ...

Have been having some Japanese medicine (tastes like cinamon but disgusting) which seems to have helped my cold - YAY!

Day 16 - Resting & then Cinema

Today Yvonne & Sean went to Taipei via the train and I stayed home to give myself an oportunity to get better. It's still cold here and I thought a day in bed would be more helpful than one spent in the cold wind. Instead I decided to upload my photos onto my website - instead I lost them ALL! Good job Leigh!

When they got back at about 4pm, Yvonne and I went into her city to buya replacementUSB reader, SD card and a certain person a DualShock3 controller. That done we came back to have dinner with the family which included turnip & mushroom soup, pork in soy sauce, chilli stirfry pig's snout (It was yum I promise) and chinese cabbage with tiny shrimp. Very tasty!

After dinner we decided to go and catch that movie. So we saw "Cloverfield" it was ok. But I wouldn't reccomend, Blairwitch style camera work with a monster in Manhatten. One highlight was the chocolate popcorm. yum yum double yum.

On the way home we went through the night markets and one thing that we saw at the markets that we also saw at the other night markets, which we found amusing is the sudden packing up of stalls with notification that the police were on the way through the market! Aparently it is people who are selling pirated goods and those who are avoiding paying tax on their sales.

Now home chilling out in front of the TV. Tomorrow looks like a trip to the local SOGO.

Day 15 - Jhongli

The wind-down weekend begins as we have returned to Taiwan. Back at Yvonne's family home to share in the preparation and experience Chinese New Year (CNY).

Today we went into the centre of the town, to look at the computer shops and a general browse, with the intention of finally getting to the cinema to watch a movie. When we almost got to the cinema we were invited to go to the supermarket with Yvonne's parents to do shopping for the CNY. One of traditions when visiting friends and family is to take a gift, so the store was rife with cakes, biscuits and candies prettily packaged - and they were flying off the shelves ... We also bought a lot of snacks and candies for our own consumption, from what I understand, CNY is a time of family and friends coming together, prayer, eating and playing Mahjong.

I absolutely love going to supermakrkets (the bigger the better) in foreign countries as it really gives you a snapshot of how the household functions by the different offerings available and it is also interesting to see things that you don't see in Australia.

After all this excitement we decied not to see a movie and went home instead. Tried to get an early night in to try and get over this cold.

Day 14 - To be or not to be

I was awoken this morning with the decision that we would not be staying in Tokyo for the additional night so instead we packed up & checked out - ready for the journey back to Taiwan.

Before leaving Sean and I utilised the last hours revisiting Akibara on what I can only label "The Knife Run". Following the sucess of our inital run, we went back to pick up additional supplies for those that had indicated their interest in such knives. I also tried to find a watch (as the $4 cheapy had died in the night before and I wanted something nice like that to take home). I also purchased some SONY headphones which I am very happy with great sound quality AND they fit in my ears (i.e. don't fall out).

We finally made it back to the rendevue point to begin the journey to the airport. The flight again, I was impressed with, China Airlines is up there for me with cabin service and quality of food. The fact that there was a TV in the back of the seat gave definate brownie points also. I watched this weird movie about this guy who has this "real doll" which he is deluded into thinking is a real person, it was called "Lars and the real girl" and then got through most of "Good Luck Chuck". I hate not seeing the end of a movie... will have to wait for DVD now....

Before boarding the plane I found the perfect watch - it is DKNY and I love it.

Oh well back in Jhongli with Yvonne's family and I do have a headcold. Lost 3 train tickets in the past 2 days - definately not with it!

Day 13 - Shibuya, Harajuku & Tsukiji

An early start today as we trekked off to the vibrant (??) and very busy Tsukiji FISH market. What a sight! I saw lots of "things" which I never seen before and doubt (hope) to never see again!

It was very interesting and this was something that I had mentioned wanting to go to...

It's just that I walked away feel a bit sad for all the dead fish, and moreover, concerned about the state of the oceans, if this is indicative of we are ganking from the waters on a daily basis. Sorry for sound a bit "conservationist" there! I mustn't have felt that bad (or got over it very quickly) as we then went to a sushi bar onsite, and chowed down on a selection of what essentially was raw fish (also prawn, squid & cooked eel) on RICE! This was not a cheap one at 3500 Yen a serve.

Walking away very full and a lighter hip pocket, we wandered down the main street of nearby Ginza, which is full of Luxury goods (i.e. Gucci, BVLGARI, etc) which were not on the shopping list. Very interesting though.

Next was HARAJUKU station, which is well known for it's eccentricly dressed youth, they didn't fail us today either - would love to be able to go on a Sunday when apparently it is TEEMING with such specimen.

Harajuku also is the location of a shrine called the Meiji Jingu Shrine. This was built in honor of Emperor Meiji. Very beautiful!

After a quick look at SNOOPY TOWN, we proceeded onwards to close-by Shibuya. We ate lunch at a Japanese BBQ restaurant, which was very yum!

The reason we went here is so that Sean could find a tackle store and it was finally located - after some time walking the cold streets. :) While we was busy in the store, I filled up on Japanese cosmetic items, at a local pharmacy.

With very sore feet we proceeded home, to find out that our great idea to change our return date was not suitable with the hotel as they are fully booked tomorrow night. I think we have found another one though, fingers crossed, or we will be sleeping in the subway station tomorrow.

I think I am coming down with a cold.

Day 12 - Disney Land - oops Sea

After four trains, we made it to Disney Sea (like Disney land but with more Water).

Very cute place, even the train to the front gate had mickey ear shaped windows. See the Disney Castle (far) in the background.

It was pretty fun over all, getting there at 10:30am and staying until about 7:30pm. The best thing was that there were none of the usual expected queues. I think they (the rest of Tokyo) were scared off by the cold weather.

This is the first show that we saw when we had just arrived.

The rides are superb and very entertaining. There were a few "scary-ish" ones but over all they were pretty tame - just entertaining. We did all of the interesting rides and also saw most of the "shows". Got my photo taken with Minnie Mouse and yeah got my fill of all that is Disney.

We have an early start in the morning - the fish markets are on the books - so have to try and get an early night.

Day 11 - Akihabara & Beyond

After eating this meal, we went to Tokyo Bay utlising a monorail type service called Yurikamome. The area is on an artificial island, called Odaiba.

The excitement of going over the rainbow bridge quickly abaited.

We were finally at our destination, Venus Fort (a really interesting shopping center) which is decked out inside like a european street and full of very expensive stores. The fountain in the middle and the casino in the bottom were also interesting quirks.

We then went to Toyota Mega Web - which was like a theme park crossed with a showroom. I "drove" (more like rode in) a self driven car, we played this racing car driver game which they use to practice their response times, we looked at some strange cars which I doubt wil ever come to Australia and Sean played GT4 in a fully function VR device.

After all of this fun we went to a copy of the statue of liberty and then browsed the shops in Aquacity Odaiba. Our tummies were rumblings so we then quickly found a restaurant (many to choose from) in the centre, which was very tasty - Sean and I both chose the teriyaki chicken which came with rice, veges and miso soup.

After all this excitement and with sore feet we trundles home to a hot shower and a Bailey's on ice (yum - only $15 AU for a bottle).

Tomorrow Disney Land ... or Sea - not 100% sure yet.

Day 10 - In Tokyo, Japan

The eagerly awaited day had finally arrived - woo hoo Japan!!! The early start was a bit depressing, as it was a rainy & cold exit from Taipei. We seem to have brought the wet weather with us to Tokyo as it is a bit dismal (and a might cold) over here.

After an early start, waiting for and then the two and half hour flight, an over an hour long train trip to metro Tokyo, and a slight misadventure (got on the right train, but in the wrong direction), we finally caught the right subway train to our stop. We then were assisted by a friendly Japanese woman who even called our hotel to find out the location, and then a short walk from the station we were not too eagerly welcomed by the front desk staff / woman. Asking for twin beds turned out to be OVERLY difficult to communicate to the silly woman who obiosuly did not have ANY English (not that I expect this but a bit of patience and personality goes a long way). The funny thing was when we realised that she was actually speaking japanese at us even though we had no understanding, we were expected to understand what she was demanding. Anyway end of rant. Once we were in (our thankfully TWIN room - I wasn't paying money to share a double with my brother) our room. The exploration of the quirks was amusing, such as the heated toilet seat withh front & back bum washing capabilities, the bizarre stove stop (1 cup only) jug and dubbed spiderman movie - to count a few. Jut wondering how I can fit the heated toilet seat into my suitcase.

Then as we were a bit hungry, we went for a stroll to the centre of Akusaka, where there is a temple and a maze of stalls selling lots of bits & pieces. Having browsed the stalls, we went to a Japanese (surprise suprise) Restaurant where we sampled the fare. I was going to have a nigiri platter as I have been craving it for a few days although decided to get Sashimi, which is some thing slightly different which had the similar meats as would be included on a nigiri platter - without the rice. It included pickled radish, a bowl of (hot) rice, and some miso soup. Not bad for the price, especially when compared to the nigiri platter which Sean ordered.

The Temple was then visited and some more borowsing of shops. Sean had a go at the Pachinko machines which is the Japanese eqivalent of a "pokie" machine - ike a mix between a pinball machine and a pokie machine, served up in a amusement parlor setting. A bit boring in my books, but then again I am not a gambler. I don't think Sean was impressed either.

After a bit more shopping, a trip to the local supermarket (love visiting supermarkets in foreign cities) we meandered home for an early night as we have a big day planned for tomorrow (not sure exactly what - but I am sure it will all be revealed in time) ...

Day 9 - Happy Australia Day!

Today was a relatively short one, as we slept in at Elaine's place. We finally caught the MRT to the rendevou point, meeting Hyatt & Christine at Noon.

We then went to a place to have lunch - we ended up choosing to eat at "Italian" place. I had lasagne.

Sean had marinara, which he ate very quickly, so must have been nice!!

We also had a vienna sausage which was suprisingly tasty!

After eating our fill, we went and had a foot & shoulder massage. The guy was pretty hard, but I think I had a few (lot) sensitive bits. I feel a lot better now! Not cheap though at $880 TWD.

After this we had a quick shop for some suitable shoes for Leigh (the hallo kitty ones were killing my feet and appeared to leak). - ooh la la - lacoste!

We then caught the train to Yvonne's city and were picked p by her dad! Now at home preparing for Japan tomorrow!

Day 8 - Taipei with Bruce

We were picked up early from Elaine and Allen's place by their good friend Bruce. We were driven in his Toyota Camry to the Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology, which is located near the mouth of the Danshui River in Bali.

After all that fun, we drove off to this funny flapping noise which turned out to be a flat tyre. None of the Taiwanese boys knew how to fix, so Sean was our hero and replaced the tyre, much to the admiration of all. We were back on the road again with the spacesaver tyre!!

Next we went up into the mountains to Jio Fen. This is a small area which is very touristy - full of little shops to pick up Taiwanese souvenirs. We stopped for some strange food which was pork meat in a gelatin shell. Not on my list of top things eaten in Taiwan. Apparently it has chinese medicine in it, which makes it red.

After this a hot sweet soup that had funny little balls that were purple and yellow. Very tasty. It was raining - which mean my shoes were sodden. Not happy Jan.

After this (and a change of shoes - don't ask), we went to Keelung, which is a major port city situated in the northeastern part of Taiwan, near Taipei. Here we saw the big boats in the port and then we went and saw Buddha's hand which is a Rock formation which appears to be a hand, in this cave. We also went to an adjoining temple, which is reputed to be "in the top 8 of taiwan temples"... I dunno about that.....

On the way back to Taipei we tried a Taiwanese burger establishment called MOS Burger. Kinda like the equivalent of Hungry Jacks. Finally we went home, via KFC and chilled out in front of the TV.

Day 7 - Up into the Mountains

Today we were driven by Julia to a shopping mall called Miramar in Neihu which has a Ferris Wheel. I bought a Canadian shirt. We then went to the former residence of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) in Taipei's Shilin district. This was full of beautiful gardens including a Rose garden.

After this, we went to the HOT SPRINGS! For $200 Taiwan dollars I spent I got a private room with a hot springs bath for 40 minutes... It was a really good experience and one that I would like to try again.

After this excitement we had teppanyaki at a local restaurant, it was a very quick meal which was cooked right in front of us. I chose prawn & chicken. It also came with been sprouts and cabbage. rice and a post-mix drink. All this for only $190 Taiwan dollars!

Finally, Sean and I caught the MRT to Elaines house where we have been catching up over a Bailey's and some Taiwanese snacks......

Day 6 - Daytrip to Taichung

Today we slept in, and then took a bus to Taichung. Once we got there we went to a old street in the city which had some interesting shops. We stopped for a Pearl Milk tea and a variety of snacks - including deep fried shitake mushrooms and beef and cheese roll (delicious).

After this we went to pick up some stickers for our mother who has a sticker printing sideline.

When the business side of things were done we went to visit some night markets and managed to find some clothes that fit. I also boughts some ADIDAS shoes and sean bought some shoes that aren't nikes (air jordans).
For dinner we had some Japanese squid balls that were "ok".

After all this fun it was time to catch the last bus back to Jhongli...

Day 5 - Taipei to Danshui to Jhongli

Today we caught the MRT to the main station again and met yvonne at maccas. Had a happy meal while I was waiting, I can confirm that they taste the same here in Taiwan.

When Yvonne arrived we took the ooprtunity to look at another department store which is near the train station, called Mitsukoshi Department Store. It is apparently Japanese. It is similar to David Jones in Australia. We didn't buy anything although I nearly bought a harrod's bag.

We then met two of yvonne's friends and had lunch at Vietnamese restaurant in the newly built area in the train station - on the top level.

After all of this, we caught the MRT to Danshui a northern area to the northern edge of outer Taipei - this is where the river meets the ocean. We went up an old street and saw a lot of shops and went to a "Believe it or not" show/museum. I also bought a fake sportsac bag. We seemed to do a lot of eating as during this walk, we ate a beancurd, ginger dessert and at another place, a special local meal which consisted of tofu with noodles inside (looked like a animal's organ). After all of this caught a train back to CBD and I went with Julie & Julia to a clothing area; while sean and yvonne caught up with Scott and went to another fishing store to purchase a reel. The shopping area had HEAPS of clothing although not much of it that I liked and the ones I did were not in my size. I did end up buying two tops and a scarf.

Finally we caught a train home to Yvonnes place where we will spend the next 2 nights.

Day 4 - Tour guide Scott in Taipei

Another day in Taipei as we caught the MRT to Taipei main station all by ourselves! We made it to the meeting point by the prescribed time and picked up by Scott for our adventure! Drive to Illy for a coffee (YUM) after that we drove to computer market and walked around this area (again) - Sean bought a video card and I bought a 8 gig SD card for my EEEPC. I think I got a bargain - less than $50. We seemed to do a lot of driving...

Lunch was at a local food cafe which specialised in deep fried pork, this meal was very tasty and only cost 90 Taiwan Dollars (about 3 bucks).

We then went to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (now called freedom hall) there was previously the old president's body there and guards - well guarding it, the changing of the guard was apparently "something to see" although the current president has removed the body and there is no longer the guards - so was not as expected. Although, still interesting to view...

Tonight for dinner we went with Scott & Elaine to a famous Japanese Hot Pot Restaurant - a very interesting experience! This was followed by another fishing tackle store where sean had an extended discussion (through translators) about fishing in Taiwan & Australia. After this, on the way home, the guys had pearl milk tea, followed by MRT safely home. Tomorrow is yet to be planned, hopefully things will be organised SOON! I ave had a headache for the past few days which went away about lunch time! I hope it stays away now.....

Day 3 - Around Taipei

Today Elaine had a day off work to show us around Taipei. We used the MRT which is the city subway service. It was pretty convenient and very easy to use - tomorrow we wil be catching the subway all by ourselves to meet Scott at the Taipei Main Station. I bought shoes at this train station for $6 Australian dollars - I was initially dubious as to the quality - although wore them all day - we will see what my feet are like tomorrow when I wake up!

It all started with a trip to traditional Chinese markets especially for Chinese new year - we were offered lots of apparently "delicious" foods - although tried lots of interesting delicacies including anchovies with sesame, ginger tea, sweets, fish candy, various nuts and saw lots of other strange and interesting things. Lots of dried foods.

We then went to computer market via custard pancake with custard inside. After this we had dumplings for lunch at a chain restaurant which serves dumplings - we ate a variety of pork, vegetable and kimchi (korean spicy pickled cabbage) flavours. We went to Taipei 101 which is the tallest building - but we didn't go up because of the fog. I looked at lots of cameras as I was going to buy a new camera although at the end I decided to buy a new battery & charger (left these bits in Australia).

We then went to some fishing shops for Sean. Final destination was the Shilin night markets which was very big and very busy. I bought a towel, socks and a cheap watch (so that I can tell the time while I am here). Walked round here for ages - was very big! Even went and looked at the puppy alley which sells all sort of pets - mainly dogs - very cute!!! They cost $1200 - which is very expensive considering that the wages are around $400 per week...

Finally home - with sore footsies and resting on the couch - contemplating a shower and then bed. I hope I don't snore tonight as I am sharing a double bed with Sean and I think I woke him up last night!! Tomorrow, Scott has the day off hoping to go to memorial and then Hot Spring in the evening!

Day 2 - Jhongli to Taipei

Last night we went to night markets and exposed to many new and exciting experiences such as tangy fruit on sticks and pancake like bird cake. I bought a dress for Jess (chinese one), so bling hair clips and some cat slippers.

Yvonne's family live in Jhongli which is a city about 30 minutes by train from Taipei. Today we woke up at yvonne's parents house around 9am and had breakfast of steamed bun with pork floss; we also had a toast with a sweet spread which smelt like popcorn and tasted very nice!! This was washed down with lavender tea. We then went on train to Taipei, Scott picked us up and took us out to lunch at a dumpling restaurant - very nice! We then went shopping at a department store called sogo. Very expensive goods... I ended up buying a KAPPA jackets (down-filled bet I will get HEAPS of use in Australia so the wogs better watch out!) and Sean also bought a TOMMY jacket whichs is VERY nice! We spent many many hours in this store - it was over 12 levels including supermarket in the basement.

We then caught MRT (subway train) and met up with Christine, Scott and Elaine and had dinner at the Prawn Restaurant which served fresh hot prawns (we saw them alive before they were cooked) with different fried cooking styles. We then were driven to Elaine & Allen's place where we stuffed around on their couch and Allen finally got my laptop to work on the internet (he is very smart!!).

Day 1 - Taiwan here i am

well i made it to Taiwan.... here I am... had my doubts about the plane landing...... China Airlines does not have the BEST reputation and then there was the sh1t with British Airlines..... Anyway - would rate it as one of the best (easiest) flights in my brief travels.

Only been here for 2 hours so have not had much experience - but going out to night markets soon.... Should be interesting - the beds are hard by the looks of it as well.... hope I sleep ok tonight - but will do cos I am a tad tired!!!!

More later... think I left part of my camera at home - so might need to BUY a new one - WHOOPS! :P

A belated merry Xmas every one.... Well it's all over for another year and next time this all happens I will have a thirtieth (is this the right spelling) to contend with... I am wondering if I can move my b'day a more convenient time - this between Xmas and NYE lark is no fun ride... Thanks mum & dad! Then again maybe as I get older and want to forget my birthday - it will work in very nicely with the everyone else forgets anyway theme...

hmmm in other news there is another overseas trip on the books.... 3 weeks away to be exact. I will be accompanying my beloved brother and girl-friend to TAIWAN and then maybe (hopefully) JAPAN!! Should be good to explore this place as I have a few friends over there whom I have been meaning to visit for a while...

Work is (well was before I went on Xmas break) quite horrendously irritating - but I think this is just a temporary thing as the heat is on - and I was doing some mundane items... Hopefully the short break will have allowed the dust to settle somewhat....

Whats going on for NYE? Who knows? Well I think we will be boring (again) this year ...

howdy all, I seem to be making a regular habit of not blogging - I know I totally suck - but then again I don't even know if anyone actually READS it so - oh well.... Anyways as you woud know - I got the job that I was talking about in my last blog - went for another one for a higher position - not as successful - meh. The new job is ok...... not real complaints to be made so far... I am over the honey-moon phase tho... On related news I am the owner of a brand new mini-laptop - I excitedly purchased a EEEpc - latest offering from ASUS, which might I say - quite a cute lil package - www.eeepc.asus.com - that should work .... I can't believe that xmas is less than 1 month away - 21 days even! Even more important - my birthday is is "just around the corner".... Not getting any younger though huh??? The big 3..0... is looming :) anyways promise to blog more - expect it direct from my couch via E3. ciao-4-now

Well in follow up to my blog about the beloved doggy, I can report that following her miraculous hospital recovery, and then more recovery at home, she is now back to 100% capacity! YAY jessica rabbit! :-P I am so happy that things have worked out....

We have had a bit of a rough weekend following the desexing of our lil girl.There were some complications with her desexing which meant that she was admitted to pet ER last night and had emergency surgery this morning to find out / fix what ever was causing her to be unwell.

As it turns out when they stitched her up internally when desexed, and the vet somehow caught a part of her bowel in the internal stitches, which caused toxic material to leak into her abdominal area, which cause her to be very sick.

She came out of surgery ok (they weren’t sure she would survive the anaesthesia) and had made a very slow progress in that she has now stabilised and will with any luck continue to recover, although as I type she is still listed as critical so we are definitely not out of the woods yet.

yeah well kinda anyways.... she is jess and she is cute, but man is she naughty, she is at that "bite and grab shit and run away with it" stage. Puppy pre-school in a week, but I don't think that will sort her out! She is giving the cats the shits... especially now she is bigger and doesn't want to wrestle my kitten anymore!

Thailand is not that far off now... 9 days and counting... but I have been off work for the past few days with a bad back, so hopefully it is better in time for the 9 hour flight. Not really excited, I don't think it has sunk in. Should be fun though with the sister an all.

I feel like going all emo and dying my hair black and be fashionably depressed... write some sad poetry and hang out near HJs in the mall.....

Yep you read right, there was a repeat performance at Blue Smoke Bar & Grill. What can I say... what a great place. My only complaint is that I am TOO full! Damn those half price buffalo wings! Oh yeah they didn't have the REALLy hot sauce so that was sad.... but we soon got over it.

IP had the same as last time ... Beef ribs.... which were up to standard! This time I thought I would try the salmon dish, which was very good. But rich! This time as we were with the olds, we partook in the coffee & dessert thing, which was surprisingly nice - the coffee was spot on, the chocolate brownie was deathly sweet (yum) and the pecan pie was good too!

Ip's olds were talking about next time, so I think we have some more addicts.... till next time!

Woo hoo! It's easter! Bring on the chocolate.... But yeah what about those who don't like chocolate ... or closer to my heart ...those who have traumatic memories of candy eggs being thrown at their heads? hrmmm anyways I guess it's a few days off work (6 for me) and a chance to hang out with the family or get drunk which ever seems like a good idea at the time!

On a lighter note there is another thailand trip in the works for me - may have mentioned previously... But yeah shorter than the last might just stay local (bangers) and this time I am trying my luck with the other sibling.... Yay Fiona!

Hippo Birdie Andy!!

Today was A's b'day which did not start off well... To start with it was a "round" number (/me whispers thirty) .. then there was the kitten that just wanted to wish him a happy birthday from mid night until 4 am ... And then when he got up, the real fun began! A car breakdown!

Lucky things got better from there with a session in the valley - I was designated driver... Which was a bit sad once we got to DOOLEY'S and the pints of Bulmers came out ... so sad .. too bad!

And then we decided to move on to dinner as the boys were keen to discover / rediscover the ribs at Blue Smoke BBQ, down the road in New Farm.... Firstly can I say CORN BREAD! well I just did ... so yum with the honey butter whip!

Andrew & Dunc of course had the beef ribs and I had the lamb (with fries and BBQ-ed corn). Both excellent choices. Although for me the star of the night was the very YUMMY buffalo wings, with the third degree sauce luckily on the side!!!

By the end of the night Andrew was ready to give birth to twins, named Bulmers ... and ... Ribs...!

Looks like I might be visiting the land of smiles again sooner than I thought.... The travel bug is still around albeit it will have taken me 12 months to get around to the next trip ....

So in June if plans come to fruition, I will be escorting my beloved flo to bangers for some hard core shopping.....

I can't wait... I have been hanging for some authentic thai food... This one which I had for work the other day - but nothing on the real TOM YUM GONG!!

Congratulations to the Happy Couple

Yesterday, IP and I had the pleasure of attending Matt & SJ's wedding... what a happy event! The weather held off, the temperature was perfect for this joyous occasion. The ceremony was at a little rotunda on the same site as the reception, so cute! And the reception was superb, I enjoyed a Barramundi with a Potato Cake like thing. The steak looked good too! Dessert was a chocolate thing or a creme brulee.... YUMMO!

I can't think of anything else to say - I am in denial about the maybe hangover.... At least I am not yakking, just a bit tired and fuzzy!

But yeah.... I thought I would get my hair "done" for the night, so I went to the hairdresser with no idea - just up! And I ended up looking like a BOOF-bowl... It was OK, but at least I know for next time to ask for anti boof.

Swifty Swift

Today I took delivery of my brand new (only 7kms on the clock) BLUE Suzuki Swift (YAY!) It took a lot of careful consideration, thought, research and a bit of waiting as well for this purchase (which is so unlike me). But now it's here in my driveway and the chazza is sadly in it's new home.... Which is a bit emotional ... but anyway ... I don't know how I survived with out powersteering, air conditioning that works and suspension - my teeth no longer rattle when I go over a bump! To the right is a picture of the weird flowers that they gave me.... Would have preferred all of the warranties on the extra bits I got like tinted windows, rust protection and pain protection!!!

But yeh I luv my new wheels.... watch this space for the pimping of my new ride!!!!

It's been an interesting couple of weeks, as we introduce the new girl to the old girl. The kitten just keeps getting braver and more brazen (read crazy) as it stalks Chloe around the house. I must admit Chloe has "improved" since her growling at the sound/smell/sight of Bella. She is now just hissing at the kitten and sometimes chasing / boofing it (nothing serious).

So it should all settle down eventually, especially when Bella gets out of her kitten stage an they just ignore each other..... but yeah.... she is a live wire! The only time I can take her photo is when she is asleep!

Well... what the fark happened to my blog spot? It's like aliens came in and bits of it, so then it looked like SHIT! Anyways... despite the name change, it is looking a LOT better.... But lets just say I aint doing this again... next time the blogspot hits the fan, it can stay there!

I was thinking the other day... (beware ...) what is it with white pepper at restaurants / food establishments? I have nothing personally against the colour of the pepper but maybe some else is pepper racist or something cos FFS how about some black pepper? It's just so much better flavour wise for most foods! White pepper (in my understanding) is designed for Asian cooking... I can as a child remember it being a welcome addition to the good old crab (or chicken) and corn soup... yum!

Any hew... it tastes a bit like DUST! Is it is just me or what?

In other breaking news... I have put a deposit down on a new (yep brand new) car! So I should be croozin in my blue mobile by 7th March! Watch this space ...

As some of you might be aware, I have been very disappointed with the quality of steaks on offer in Brisvegas... I mean you go to a steak restaurant and pay (good money) for a steak... So you expect some bang for your buck!! But no... well not recently, until today!!!!!!!

YUP, enter THE Morrison! What a steak! What a place.
I got the steak, just as I ordered it, it came with a salad that wasn't full of veges (don't ask!) and the chips were divine.... It came with a piece of garlic bread also! The mushroom sauce was it's only falling point.... Should have got the pepper, but at least I know for next time.... mmm next time! Check out my steak all that pinky red goodness... I'll be back.

This weekend, as part of our Saturday morning "errands" I convinced IP that we should go to the local RSPCA to see what dogs they had, not to adopt, but just "look".

Well, can I start by saying that although I have been pining for a new fur-baby for sometime, it was in no way planned. Although ... We came home with a new baby kitten, Bella! The reason why I picked her is because she was so cute! The beautiful blue/grey fur just melted me.. and she was so affectionate and "slutty"... How could I go wrong?

YAY! Happy (hissy??) times are here!

Well it has only taken (took?) 6 months but I have finally ordered my holiday album to be printed (like a wedding album except I went on holidays). So I am a bit excited. The website says it will be printed and delivered within 10 days!! It will be good to finally have as a memento of such an exciting trip! I went with myphotofun which seemed to be a good deal all round.

Thank gawd its da weekend… it’s a busy one planned. Ciao 4 now.

All my friends are getting married...

Actually lie, they not getting married, they ARE married and they are having kids! I am going to be an aunty in June as the T&B prepare for their first born! As exciting as kids might be - and I am very excited about being aunt, I can't see myself giving birth any time soon! Actually I lie (again) I want to have a kid yesterday, a furkid that is! In my opinion Chloe needs a little brother and now that we have a yard, A and I are thinking that a Border Collie would complete the family. Surprisingly there are a lot of people who have these types of dogs in our area. They are such intelligent dogs and attractive also!

So yeah that’s about all for me – work has improved somewhat as I settle into 2007 and yeah bring on the holidays!

First Innings

First day back at work after the break was a bit hard.... hrmm... seek.com.au? Nah just jokes... Seriously though can I have another week off?

We have some new people start so finally Gem & me are not "alone". Time will tell .... it has to be better .. many hands make light work and all that!

I think I will just start planning my next (mini) trip. A flight to Melbourne or weekend away to a romantic location.... hrmmm dream on!

Well it's 2007, a fresh start huh?? I hope that 2007 is better than 2006, not that 2006 was so bad, but improvement is always good! This year I have plans to return to Thailand (although this may change dependant of current terror situation) and also hopefully a long trip to TAIWAN to see some of my buddies who have returned from their studies in Australia. Should be very interesting!! I also hope to carve into my studies and get some of that FINTO-ed!!

Having my birthday last month was a bit of a wake up call, not many 2os years left! The big three-zero is looming! Oh well just means that I have to party hard before then.... or what ever!

I am glad that I decided to take a few extra days off, as I don't know if I would have been very productive if I had returned to work today with all of the suckers! :P Another couple of days.... WAHOOO!

So much and so little has happened since I last blogged. I think I might just give you the highlights since last time (not in any (or chronological) order):

IP bought a house, so we moved from the hotbox in paddo to a bedecked not-at-all hot house in the 'burbs.
I (more than) passed my first uni subject.
Chloe (the cat) lost a kilo - hey thats 1/6th of her body weight.
I changed jobs, but not employers.
In September I spent some time on Fraser Island (on the Sandy Cape).
We did a shotgun wine tour of the hunter valley. (IPs work xmas party was in the Hunter Valley)
IP bought (another) Landcruiser BJ42 from Melbourne.

I can't think of anything else right now, might edit more later ... watch this space....

Birthdays, Xmas & Peaches!!

On Christmas Eve, IP and I went to the Farmer's Markets, and stocked on all sorts of yummy bits including, fruit & salad items, fresh yoghurt, olives (and more olives) and lots of other crap!

Tonight I cooked the now sad looking nectarines & peaches. So I have strewed peaches (& nectarines) and a Peach, Nectarine & Kiwi Fruit Crumble.

Well Xmas was quiet in the new home, just a quiet BBQ on the deck, then we entered the dead zone (time between xmas & NYE) which conveniently contains my birthday! yay..... So yes I officially turned another year older..... hrmmm... We are having a few people over for NYE, lets hope it is a bit bigger than the birthday celebration! It has been very relaxing this year just fluffing around the house, chilling on the deck in the hammock, watching movies. I haven't even done that much shopping.

Anyhew, hope santa brought you what you wanted!

What an anti-climax...

Well I am back, almost a week now, can I go again? Nah just jokes, it's just that it's so weird, to be back after three weeks on the "road". The reality of normal life just seemed to have shrunk in the wash! Things have improved (thank gawd) as I have acclimatised back in the groove of work, loved ones and study... But it was a bit hairy for a few days there....

I went to my orientation meeting this morning for the university degree which I have enrolled myself in. It really was a waste of time, but am glad I went, cos it was good to see the study centre and start familiarise myself with uni ways!

This afternoon I looked at a unit, which I have kinda made an offer on. I doubt it will come through - there seems to be a bit of interest in it! But, watch this space!

Delayed-schmayed

Didn't think I would get this "opportunity". But here I am "stranded" in Brunei Airport! YAY! Lucky it's only for a couple of hours not over night or anything crazy!

It makes me think though, what did people do before the internet? Here I am blogging and msning away the time! Maybe I am an addict, but yeah it just makes ya think!

So now I will be arriving into Brisvegas at 5:00am. I guess it is for the best, cos it means the taxi boi can sleep in a bit... 5am sounds heaps better than 3am.

Watched "Shaggy Dog" on the plane from Bangkok. Was very funny, even though it's a Disney creation intended for kids. Has Tim Allen & the brunette chick our of "Sex & the City". We had screens in the back of the seat, which was pretty cool. So a movie and a meal did short work of that flight!

This is probably my last "blog" before I return home. So yeah home ...home.... Yay ... I think....
Today I went on another solo expedition in Bangers. Destination was the Grand Palace!

Afters, I went to the MBK Shopping Centre to see if the rumours about it being HUGE were true.

Yep it's a big shopping centre - heaps of crap that I didn't buy - might I add (suitcase is already TOO chockas!). They also have a really good food court (5th Avenue??) which I had an old favourate - hainanese chicken rice. Have I mentioned that I am over Thai food? yeh, can't wait for some "normal" food.

Tonight the boys and I went to see a boxing match - but it was too expensive, 1500 baht is just too much money to spend on such an event. So I went "home" and the boys are out on the prowl. Bit depressing for last night on holiday but thems the breaks!!

Depart Banger tomorrow at 1:00pm and arrive into Brisvegas on Monday morning at 3:00am. Cya there? :)

Bayioke & Beyond

Yeah well I heard a rumor that the Thai's like their shopping, and you would believe it if you saw the size and number of shopping centres around Bangkok! I think that I am "almost" shopped out! Yesterday we went to Pantip Plaza which is an IT nerd's haven. Today I left the anchors (boys) behind and explored on my own, carefully following detailed instructions which I had kindly provided by a recent visitor. Lets just say I have enough socks, shirts and earrings to last a lifetime! I have just about everything that I need (want) except for some classy handbags, so watch this space.
Last night, we went up to the Observation Level of the Baiyoke Sky Tower (Tallest building in Thailand!), to see the view. The current population of Bangers is 7 million and I can believe it with the number of buildings which span to (past??) the horizon. During the day Bangkok is the smokiest and dirtiest city I have ever visited (ok, I haven't really been to that many places) but by night it is ... bewdiful! The photos don't really do it justice ....

Well, it's been three weeks away from my baby cat (hi miow) and I just might be getting withdrawal symptoms. I have been carefully avoiding patting or touching ALL animals whilst in Thailand as I know they are horribly dirty, disease ridden and yuck.

But, you must admit, this cat is/was very cute! yah even after she drooled on my lap......

I am glad to know that not all Siamese cats are snotty little misses! See Mischa .... You can come out from under your bed!

And yeah I do know that it is 2:40am thai time / 5:40am brisvegas time...

Tigers & War Memorials

The last 2 days have been spent on a tour, which can I say was a rip off? Of I did. That aside, we some pretty remarkable things.

The tour was focused around the Kanchanburi area (yes, where that Aussie got shot).

The main event was always going to be the tiger temple, which is a Buddhist temple which has adopted tiger cubs rescued by surrounding villagers from poachers and the like. Not the most photogenic, but proof that I DID TOUCH A TIGER! And didn't even slightly get mauled! The tigers were amazing. I kinda had the feeling like it's turning into a bit of a tourist trap, but yeah enjoyed it just the same. (If you want to know more about the Tiger Temple check out their website)

We also went to the bridge on River Kwai, walked the hellfire pass - this is a 4 km section of the train tracks built in WW2 by Prisoners captured by the Japanese. The walk was beautiful and wasn't really that hard. I was amazing to see what the POWs in WW2 had to experience and forced to do by their captors.

We also saw a really nice waterfall, which was not far from the side of the road. We also happened upon some crazy monkeys which were pretty cool to see. The tour bus Just pulled off the road to a small layby in which the public can feed the monkeys. They didn't bite - but grabbed the food out of our hands.

Traveling & Stuff

Yeah so, on the Sunday we basically just traveled from Chang Mai to Bangkok, our final holiday destination, before we return home. I am getting sick of living out of a suitcase, the novelty has WORN OFF. Especially now in Bangkok when the clothes are ALL dirty and a laundry that charges by the kilo in no where to be seen!

On Sunday night we decided to amble down the road in search of food. We were harassed by a tuk tuk driver who insisted on driving us to our destination to prove that the place we were heading to was not open - of course, the shops on the street were not open, but I am sure the restaurants in the square would have been doing a good trade. So instead he drove us to a restaurant of his choosing, which ended up costing us just under 1000 baht (meals have been costing us less than 300 baht for the 3 of us). RIP OFF!

On the way to the restaurant he kept going on about nice Thai girls, and ping-pong balls (need I say more), which we laughed off.

After dinner, we wanted him to drive us back to the general area of where he picked us off, we didn't want him to know where we were staying...! But he got pissed that we didn't want to see the ping-pong balls - and tried to bet with us that the pratunam markets (our destination) would be closed. Of course, I know they are 24 hours and that they don't appear from the street. So he walked off and we took the opportunity to "run away" and hail a REAL cab. So that is our tuk-tuk story....

It's a Chang-a-thon

While I was in Chang Mai, Sean and I went for a walk into an area called the old town, which is surrounded by a moat & the remanents of a wall. To the left is a pagoda which we happened to chance apon...

To the right is the place where we had lunch - quite tasty! And one of the less dodge places!

On last Saturday we went on a one day tour to the Golden Triangle, Massai border and surrounds.

Was pretty good. Saw some really lovely sites and learnt some interesting stuff about the history of Thailand. When we got to the golden triangle, we got in a long boat &amp;amp; went to the golden triangle point in the middle of the river between myanmar, Thailand & Laos.

This is where they used to trade opium for gold. And then went to Laos and looked at some markets. I bought a bottle of "snake whiskey" which actually has a cobra in it. Bit scary, I don't know (think) that I will get it back into the country, so we will see.

In the afternoon we also went to some hill-tribe villages, the difference between the two tribes was astonishing. One was dirty and poverty ridden and the second, tidy and orderly. They were literally 30 metres away from each other!!

It was a long and boring drive from Chang Mai (where we were staying) and Chang Rai, which is the main town from which the tour was close to.

On the way home we (the tour bus) hit a dog in the street. The care for animals here is terrible. There was no concern for the dog at all, but the driver reversed back to pick up a bit that snapped of the car's bullbar!

A lot of Thai (food)

Today was one of the days on my trip that I was really looking forward to - the Thai cooking course (yay!)

Anyways, I want to start by saying that there was a lot of food, considering that I have been eating 1-2 small meals a day - I had 6 courses over the span of the day! I also picked up some little tricks and stuff, and am firing to get home and cook up a storm at home. I have to say also that it was some of the best Thai food that I have had, and I have had a lot of Thai food over the years, maybe it was because it was freshly cooked in front of us. Sean & I (the third party piked) had a lovely day learning how to cook a number of popular Thai meals, which were: pad thai, tom yum kung (my favourate), spring rolls, green curry, stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts and mango with sticky rice. Yui (the teacher) is so friendly and had lots of information to share with us, especially on the tour of the local markets (where there was no tourists) showing us the local foods. Snorkels & Changers

I am in Chang Mai now (changers). The weather is a bit cooler than previously. But I have to tell you about my snorkeling experience. What a wonder! I was a bit reluctant to go, as I am not a strong swimmer, had tried snorkeling once before unsuccessfully and I was feeling a bit sick that morning, so didn't really know what to expect. It was also an over cast day and rough as guts on the boat out.The 1.5 hour catamaran took us to this tiny (and I mean tiny) little island just off Koh Tao (a slightly bigger island), where we snorkeled of the beach, I feel like I was going to chuck when I first put the mask on, but finally got the hang of it. It was BRILLIANT! I have never experienced any thing like it. Was like a whole different world! The coral was mostly dead, but the fish were bloody amazing (pictures to come). I made use of my new underwater camera - yay!

Yesterday was a long day, spent whole day traveling - boat from Koh Phanang to Samui and then flight to Bangkok and then another flight to Changers. Our flight was delayed out of Bangkok which meant we would have have had to leave at 10:45pm. So we got a refund and caught another flight which left at 8:15pm.

Chang Mai is not what I expected, much smaller and quieter. It is also much cleaner than I expected. Less people speak English though. Oh well better keep trucken@!

Another day in paradise ...

Yep, it's another day in warm weather, white beaches and clear skies.... Do you like the picture of my bungalow?

Who can complain? Not I! Well maybe a little bit... I do have this massive "scrape" up my leg, which aches when I walk and I have managed to sunburn my forehead!

I was stressing about my flights out of here, cos the times were too short, but now it's all good cos the helpful people on reception have fixed it all up for me, well at least I hope, the language barrier is a bit scary... I guess we just have to hope for the best! I just checked the online view flights thing and now I can't see our flights, hopefully it's just a temporary thing...

Yesterday on our bike ride, I bought the coolest (literally) pair of Thai pant yesterday, purple and very very comfy.

Last night we went down to the town - cos we are up over a hill on a seperate beach - and watched a movie and had some food, and then watched Germany flog Sweden in the football.

This is the beach where it all happens at night, the alcahol you can buy from the seven-11 and then just sit on the beach and soak up the entertainment...

Tomorrow is our last day on Koh Phangan. We are going on a snorkeling trip to a smaller island called Koh Tao. Last time I snorkeled it was a bit of a disaster, so we will wait and see what happens. It was one of the more expensive tours, which takes us to the island 1.5 hours away in a a/c catermaran, at a whopping 1300 baht (50 bucks). Things are very cheap here even though it sounds expensive... I almost balked at the cost, cos it's a lot of Thai money even though it really isn't much in comparison to what it might cost on the barrier reef in Australia.

Went for a walk to get some photos of phangers... to share with all - sorry for delay but internet is slow here! This is the same beach as above, the taxi boats waiting for a fare!

Koh Phanging..

Yeh, on Koh Phangan (think that's how it spelt) and I have to say I am having fun, but so so tired! The keyboards here are weird too... Anyways, last few days that we have been here have been low key, been not eating much and chilling lots...

Although today, the boys hired scooters and Sean doubled me. That was a bit scary, steep hills (up & down) were the least of it! The corkers was when we went on turn off to waterfall, which ended up as a a 4wd track... Very steep and very bumpy. IP you would have loved to take your shorty! But doubled on a scooter, maybe not. I finally chucked the girl spack, when we fell off the bike - can you blame me? And then looked at the steep hill ahead and just went "NAH"!

I didn't put the sunscreen on my face properly, so think I will have sun stroke tomorrow :(
Planning on a boat day trip to a smaller island Koh Tao... See how I feel. Tomorrow night is black moon festival also.

Anyways, gonna go back to air con comfort away from the mossies.... Don't have the rid on cos I Over dosed on it yesterday I think) and made myself sick! The joys of Thailand. Am having fun serious! Bit dizzy though... maybe sun or heat stroke?

Yeah we got into Koh Samui this morning at 7am. After 7 hour flight to Brunei, then 3 hour flight to bangkok, and a over night (6 hours) on the hardest most evil chairs in the world; and finally a 1 hour flight to Koh Samui.

About the Bangkok Airport, "sleeping arrangements" - there were all Limo drivers hanging out there as well, must be their haunt..... Bit scary when they turned up, but they just went to sleep.
Didn't get much sleep so it made for a very very long day!

After a refreshing shower, we decided to walk up the street to the street, OH MY GAWD! The awful smells, the heat, and the distance - so so so long of a road! Not a pleasant experience.... And the dogs.... ew!

Anyway I must sounds like a whinging gurl, but really I am not.... Happy to be here and on the big adventure! And it can ONLY go up at the moment! (Photo of the boys at dinner)

It's been a day of farwells today, as I went in to work, on a rec leave day even, to say good bye to my boss, who is leaving to go to NZ. After this I stumbled down to IPs haunt for his farwell, having finsihed up at VB today. Also, there were mini farewells and best wishes for my "mammoth" trip to Thailand (yay).

Get really excited now, so much to do and so so little time..... Ah well, can't wait for the flight at 1pm on "montag", might miss the boy (and the gurly-cat) tho.

Anyways, bed time for moi.... ciao bananas.

Five sleeps until....

Only 5 sleeps until you-know-what! Yay! Getting excited now.... except I don't have a suitcase! Well I tell a lie, I do have suitcases, 2 or 3 to be exact. But this is my woe. One is HUGE, now I mean mega huge... but I think this is too be to travel around with and I think it might have so much space that I am likely to go over the 20kg luggage weight limit. And then to the other suitcases, they are povo, made out of cardboard (almost) suitcases which would be ok, except that I wouldn't want to check them in, but they are too big to take on the plan (cabin luggage). So I think I need to buy something. I found something that I like at a luggage store in the city, antler brand, but it's $120 bucks! So I don't know.... there was also one at DJs which could be good as I do have $100 in DJs vouchers, but meh.... I don't know..... Anyways, that where my heads at.

Meh, I am tired today... But I guess that's what happens when you try to sleep when you aren't really asleep. Andrew bought a steak & mushroom pie back from Yatala, which was pretty good, but now my tummy hurts...

We learnt that a work-mate is going to Europe soon, which is right after another work-mate who is now there - must be contagious! I wonder if I will catch it like the cold I seemed to have shared around?

Not long now until I am off on a (hopefully not a wicked doom balloon) flight to Bangkok (otherwise known as bangers). We overnight it at the airport before a early morning flight to Koh Samui. I am feeling a bit worried about the hanging out in the airport at bangers, but figure that the amazing race has been doing it (why is that they get to leave at inopportune times which get them to the airport in time to sit around for a early morning flight - wouldn't they rather be sleeping???). But anyway I digress... Once we get to Samui everything should be hunky-doory as there will be sun, beach and shopping... 2 days of that before a boat ride to Koh Phanang.

Anyways, Andrew is whinging.... we are going for a crooze! ciao bananas!

Pretty lazy day today, with a noon lay-in and a lazy late lunch at the Newmarket Hotel, which was pretty good. The Mezze Platter consisted of oyster shooters, salami, trio of dips, calamari, salad and toasted turkish bread. Was very good, especially in comparison to the one we had at Stones Corner Hotel last Sunday, which has skanky prawns on it.

Tonight, I cooked a fish curry which was pretty good... And a good mix of veges....

Oh well only 6 days until I flutter off to Thailand, yay, but three days of work this week to get through first... Don't know if I can make it (grin).

Whoo hoo! Only 7 working days until Thailand (13 full days).. Can't wait, but there is so so much to do before then! I hope I get it all done....

Today I bought an i-river H10 5 gig MP3 player, very cool schmool! I actually bought an OMNI MF1100 1 gig yesterday but was very disappointed with it. So I took it back, the menus sucked and the sound quality was poor. To make matters worse, the headphone jack was not the normal size. I ended up getting the H10 for $30 more than the omni. What a bargain!

I am very happy (so far) with the H10, very easy to use and sounds brilliant! So I am nearly ALL sorted with the toys, I bought a Olympus Camera a few weeks ago. You know the one you can drop, take under water and stuff (the advert on tv shoes it in the dog's mouth with drool all over it).

Anyways, it's late so might log off.

Yay, it's the weekend! How cool is that? Now it's not very long until T-day... Thailand is *just* around the corner.... Which is good, but it also means I have to get organised.... Stress!

Anyhew, IP is cooking sweet'n'sour pork. I just did a taste test, pretty good! Cept I burnt my tongue! d0pe!

Watchout it's a food review

So here goes....

Tonight, (IP having returned from a Levuka weekend) we were in no mood to do the cook and (heaven forbid) clean thing. So we decided to go to The Fish Grotto, but it was closed and then drove past a noisy and full Normanby, ending up at the newly renovated Newmarket Hotel.

I must admit, I was impressed by the decor and ambience of the restaurant. I though surprised at the limit of options (and of course there was steak) on the menu. In retrospect I think that this is probably not such a bad thing.

Food: I ended up resisting the steak, and ordering the Tasmanian Lamb Rump and IP had an eye fillet with garlic prawns. The Lamb was great (it came with a bean mash, an olive tapenade thing and beans). It was all the things lamb rump should be - moist, medium rare, yum. IP noted that his steak was good, although the prawns were very average. One thing we both noted was a "charcoal" flavour which was a tad unpleasant.

Service: Service started off well, but then resulted in being average. The chick managed to bring out the wrong beer for IP, so he ended up getting a full strength Cascade Lager (he asked for the light version) which was more $$$ than the prefered same strength Boags - which he would have ordered if he wanted to have a full strength. Lucky he wasn't driving, oh wait a minute he was.

Overall: I reckon that they are a 7 out of 10.
